Merchants Millpond State Park

Life proliferates in a swamp more than any other biome. It gains roothold on every available bit of soil and some places where there is no soil at all.
There is a diverse community of life growing on the trunk of this one bald cypress tree and that’s without even counting the Spanish moss hanging from the upper branches. There are shrubs and grasses and vines – an island of life reflected in the still surface of Merchants Millpond.
I think what most intrigues me about this image is this island life, both a part of the larger community and apart, like a castle surrounded by a moat.
