As the water temperature cools in the fall, mist often lingers on the surface of Merchants Millpond, lending a surreal aspect to the landscape as the sun silhouettes the bald cypress and water tupelo and the Spanish moss appears luminous.
Wetlands don’t accommodate building lasting memorials – menhirs or dolmens or rings of standing stones. They are, by nature, fluid. What devotion we pay them must be in the moment as well, as effortless – and as mythic – like water.

is as soft, as weak, as water;
Nothing else can wear away
the hard, the strong,
and remain unaltered.”
Tao te Ching, Lao Tzu
Translated by Ursula K. LeGuin
