Shadow Pond

Angled sunlight throws the long shadows of water tupelo and bald cypress across mats of floating duckweed and spadderdock on the surface of Merchants Millpond, NC. Spanish moss, illuminated by the early light, hangs like a gothic tapestry from the limbs of a tupelo tree rising from the swamp.

The yellow blossoms and broad leaves of spadderdock often clog the surface of the millpond in summer. The plants, also called cow lily and yellow pond lily, are rooted in the muck by long straight stems, making a passage through them challenging. Shadows fall across the red and green mats of duckweed and water fern that seems like a solid surface.

Paddling across the millpond in the early morning is like stealing into the nave of a gothic cathedral before anyone arrives for morning prayers. It is wondrously still with only the occasional twitter of a belted kingfisher or squawk of an irate blue heron.
